The motel road trip. Hanford, Washington.

The Hanford Reach National Monument is a national monument in the U.S. state of Washington. It was created in 2000, mostly from the former security buffer surrounding the Hanford Nuclear Reservation (Hanford Site). The area has been untouched by development or agriculture since 1943. Because of that it is considered an involuntary park.

There’s a lure of extremeness here. Warm turns quickly into hot. Resonating road noise is muted by birds and insect hums. The approach, the road along the eastern bank, is unforgettable because it is the only thing you know in the entire landscape, that receding line of flora, in full blossom. The horizon is the mystery and the answer.
